Legionnaires’ disease doesn’t spread from one person to another. You can’t catch it by touching or talking to someone infected.

2
The bacteria Legionella pneumophila lives in stagnant or warm water systems like pipes, hot tubs, and cooling towers.
3
People usually get infected when they breathe in tiny droplets (mist or vapor) containing the bacteria.
4
Large buildings — hotels, hospitals, offices often have complex plumbing systems where the bacteria can grow.
5
Legionella can spread through cooling towers in central AC systems (not window units). Poor maintenance = higher risk.
6
Warm water + poor disinfection = perfect breeding ground. Inhaling mist from infected spas can cause outbreaks.
7
Legionella can lurk in showerheads, taps, and plumbing systems especially in old or unused buildings.
8
Travel-associated Legionnaires’ disease often happens in places with complex water systems and poor cleaning protocols.
9
Older adults, smokers, and people with weak immune systems are more likely to get sick if exposed.
10
Regular disinfection, temperature control, and cleaning of water systems can stop Legionella growth and prevent disease spread.
